Miandad and Waqar can savour Hamilton Lynn McConnell - 26 March 2001
Pakistan team members coach Javed Miandad and fast bowler Waqar Younis will go into the final National Bank series Test with fond memories of Hamilton tomorrow. They were members of the side which snatched a remarkable win from under New Zealand's noses at the ground in 1993. New Zealand was still in a state of euphoria after the success of the 1992 World Cup and although beaten in the semi-finals by Pakistan, New Zealand took out the one-day series in the 1992/93 tour 2-1. In Hamilton, New Zealand, under captain Ken Rutherford, who stood in for Martin Crowe, who injured himself at practice before the game, dismissed Pakistan for their second lowest score in New Zealand of 174, Danny Morrison taking five for 41, and the home team were left with a target of 127 to win. Things were going along nicely until Asif Mutjaba stuck a hand out at short leg and pulled in a superb reflex catch to dismiss Andrew Jones. Waqar Younis had been in the intended last over of his spell when the wicket revived his spirits and he drove a swathe through the New Zealand middle-order, which when compounded with Wasim Akram's control saw the home team all out for 93. Miandad remembered the game today. "We were losing the game, but we won the Test," he said. Miandad, who has the record of most Test runs scored against New Zealand for a player from any country, added: "I missed at century at this ground." It was only just. He was out for 92 in the first innings while Akram took five for 45 in the second innings rout and Waqar five for 22. © CricInfo
