Confusion today surrounded whether West Indies captain Jimmy Adams was still in the job.

Earlier in the day it appeared that Adams had been sacked when a note, accompanying the announcement of two West Indies squads, stated: "A new West Indies captain will be appointed later this week to lead the regional team in the five-Test series."

However, Gregory Shillingford, the chief executive officer of the West Indies Cricket Board, later insisted that no decision had yet been made.

He said on the board's website: "A final decision has still to be reached. The process of board members casting their votes will not be completed until Saturday or Sunday."

The sacking of Adams has been widely predicted, particularly after he had been left out of a 16-man training squad preparing to take on the South African tourists.

And back into the squad comes Carl Hooper, the red-hot favourite to take over the captaincy from Adams.

Adams took over the captaincy from Brian Lara last March. But West Indies have endured a dismal run under him, losing 3-1 in England last year and having been whitewashed more recently in Australia 5-0. In addition, Adams' own batting form has suffered.

Meanwhile Hooper, who announced his retirement from international cricket in 1999 but then did a U-turn, has been in excellent form for Guyana.

The selectors have chosen Jamaican opening batsman Chris Gayle and bowlers Reon King and Cameron Cuffy (of Guyana and the Windward Islands respectively) as part of the 16-man squad to attend the training camp this weekend in Trinidad.

Gayle's compatriot and fellow opening batsman Leon Garrick and middle-order batsman, Shivnarine Chanderpaul of Guyana, are also invited to the camp.

But because the final of the Busta International Shield is to be contested between Jamaica and Guyana before the first Cable and Wireless Test, many of these players will not be able to attend the camp.

Selectors will therefore consider performances in the Shield final as well as in the three-day practice game between South Africa and the Busta XI before determining the final 13-member West Indies team for the First Test in Guyana, starting on March 9.

Thirteen players have been selected for the Busta XI which will take on South Africa in Guyana from March 4-6.

The 16-man training camp squad is: Chris Gayle, Leon Garrick, Wavell Hinds, Brian Lara, Marlon Samuels, Ramnaresh Sarwan, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Carl Hooper, Ridley Jacobs, Dinanath Ramnarine, Mahendra Nagamootoo, Courtney Walsh, Nixon McLean, Reon King, Cameron Cuffy and Colin Stuart.

The 13-man Busta XI squad is: Sherwin Campbell (recommended captain), Daren Ganga, Sylvester Joseph, Tonito Willett, Kurt Wilkinson, Ryan Hinds, Courtney Browne, Suleiman Benn, Mervyn Dillon, Kerry Jeremy, Jermaine Lawson, Ricky Christopher and Dave Mohammed.
