Dinanath Ramnarine
Wisden CricInfo staff - June 22, 2001
Wisden overview When it comes to flat West Indian legspinners, Ramnarine is probably the best of the bunch. Mahendra Nagamootoo or Rawl Lewis are handy allrounders, but their wickets come around about as often as Halley's Comet. Ramnarine's first five Tests, by contrast, yielded an encouraging 20 victims and a strike rate of around 75 balls per wicket - not quite Sydney Barnes, but not Ian Salisbury either. His Test recall for the 2000-01 South Africa series followed a successful Busta Cup season, in which he topped the wicket-takers' table with 41 at 18.58. Good googly, floppy flipper ... and a freefalling batting average. In eight successive Test innings (and four successive defeats), between April 2001 and February 2002, Ramnarine did not contribute a single run. Simon Briggs
