Steve Rhodes
Wisden CricInfo staff - June 21, 2001

Wisden overview
A reassuring, flinty presence behind the stumps at Worcester since 1985, Rhodes is also a fighting back-foot player with a meaty cover-thump at No. 6 or 7. England chose him for the tour of India in 1988-89, but it was cancelled and Rhodes had to serve a second apprenticeship on four A tours before finally making his Test debut, against New Zealand in 1994. He kept well and batted even better - saving the second Test at Lord's - and made it on the Ashes trip that winter. But he was worked over by Craig McDermott, out-thought by Shane Warne, and, after 11 Tests in a row, was ditched for good. But for sheer endurance, Rhodes, who spent his first four years at his native Yorkshire, is as tough as they come. Lawrence Booth
