Mike Smith
Wisden CricInfo staff - June 21, 2001
Wisden overview At 5ft 9ins and with a shuffling, bustling approach to the crease, Smith may not have opening batsmen fearing for their safety. But he's accurate, swings it, and possesses the left-armer's crucial knack of bringing the ball back into the right-handed batsman. For Gloucestershire he doubles up as stock bowler and wicket-taker, particularly in the one-day game, and for years was a perfect foil for Courtney Walsh. He won his only England cap in the 1997 Ashes series, but his swing deserted him and he was unlucky when Graham Thorpe dropped Matthew Elliott at slip at a pivotal moment in the match. As a batsman goes in just before the rabbits. Lawrence Booth
