Matthew Fleming
Wisden CricInfo staff - June 20, 2001
Wisden overview Something of a Corinthian figure with a red face and a carefree approach to the game, Fleming's first two scoring strokes in Championship cricket were sixes - and he has barely paused for breath since. With the ball he is a dabbler, always trying out new variations of pace, and finding away swing with a side-on action characterised by a horizontal kick of the right leg in the delivery stride. His clean-hitting and innovative seam-up won him 11 one-day caps for England, and, after being summoned as a late replacement for the injured Darren Gough, he was a crucial member of Adam Hollioake's bits-and-pieces side that triumphed in Sharjah in December 1997, winkling out wickets by taking the pace off the ball. Before taking up the game, Fleming was in the Royal Green Jackets, and is now the Chairman of the Professional Cricketers' Association; he is also the only old Etonian currently playing county cricket. Fleming replaced Steve Marsh as Kent captain at the end of the 1998 season. Lawrence Booth
