England's missed opportunities
Wisden CricInfo staff - July 6, 2001

England hardly need reminding that if they are to win the Ashes then every chance that comes their way has to be taken. In the final session of the first day they dropped Hayden and Ponting, and in the first three hours of Friday's play they spurned three opportunities to separate the Waugh brothers. The misses handed control of the match to the Australians, and even the removal of Steve Waugh midway through the afternoon session couldn't dispell the feeling that the damage had been done.

  • Australia 218-3, over 45.1 Mark Waugh came down the track to Ashley Giles, missed the ball, but Stewart fumbled the stumping chance with Waugh, who was on 28, stranded.
  • Australia 238-3, over 50.2 In the first over after lunch, Mark Waugh edged Craig White, but the straightforward chance was dropped by Marcus Trescothick, at second slip, going to his left. Waugh was on 29.
  • Australia 245-3, over 56.3 Steve Waugh set off for a risky run on the off-side, and would have been out had Ian Ward's excellent pick-up and throw not missed the stumps. Steve Waugh was on 63.
