India v West Indies 1999-2000 Wisden CricInfo staff - July 6, 2001
Toss: West Indies. The previous day's rain granted India only a brief stay of execution. After a shaky start, West Indies ran out deserved winners, 20-year-old Powell concluding a successful tournament with a whirlwind 124, his first one-day international hundred in his fourth innings. It was an astonishing performance, the more remarkable because West Indies, chasing 255, were struggling at 67 for four in the 17th over when he reached the crease. By the time he was out, top-edging a pull, he had hit nine fours and eight sixes in his 93 balls – and West Indies were only nine short of victory. He added 61 with Chanderpaul and 118 with Perry, who gave vital, intelligent support. Earlier, India had lost Tendulkar to the last ball of the first over, but were held together by Dravid, who batted with mounting confidence to finish unbeaten on 103. Chopra filled the support role with an accomplished maiden half-century in limited-overs internationals. He also accounted for two important batsmen to tilt matters India's way – until Powell took over. Man of the Match: R. L. Powell. Man of the Series: R. L. Powell. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
