Sri Lanka v Australia 1999-2000 Wisden CricInfo staff - July 6, 2001
At Galle, August 22. Australia won by 50 runs (D/L method). Toss: Sri Lanka. International debut: S. I. de Saram. Bad weather continued to dog Galle, whose first three scheduled one-day internationals in June 1998 were all washed out. This time, the consequences were less severe. Arriving midway through Australia's innings, rain reduced the match to 43 overs a side, and eventually caused Sri Lanka's target to be set at 211. Australian openers Gilchrist and Mark Waugh had raised 60 by the 11th over but, after Gilchrist was controversially given run out by third umpire Pathirana, Jayasuriya seized three key wickets. He finished with five for 28. Bevan regained the initiative, hitting 42 in 44 balls, then Gillespie made three early strikes as Sri Lanka struggled to 41 for four. The middle order could not regain momentum as Warne overtook Craig McDermott's Australian record of 203 wickets in one-day internationals. Man of the Match: J. N. Gillespie. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
