Under 19s team for opening ECB Championship match v Sussex. Mike Vimpany - 15 July 2001
Rain denied Hampshire Young Cricketers victory over Gloucestershire in the final warm up for the opening ECB Under-19 County Championship match against Sussex at the Rose Bowl. Cove left-hander Neil Randall hit a century as Hampshire piled up 415-9 and then had Gloucestershire struggling at 224-7 when rain intervened. Randall (107), Ian Hilsum (75), Paul Cass (65), Chris Benham (50) and Luke Merry (39) prospered in the Hampshire run glut. Three promising players from Hampshire's Under-16 ranks - Paul Cass, Naqeeb Ali and David Wheeler - are set to make their Under-19 debuts in the two-day match against Sussex, which starts at the Rose Bowl tomorrow (Monday).
