The Numbers Game with Francis Payne

Records tumble at Napier and a thousand wickets
Francis Payne - 26 February 2001

One-Day International history was made in the second one-dayer in Napier when Saeed Anwar was dismissed first ball of the match by Daryl Tuffey. This followed Wasim Akram's first ball-of-the-match dismissal of Adam Parore at Auckland and was the first time the feat had ever been achieved in successive One-Day Internationals.

Tuffey was just the third New Zealand player to take a wicket with the first ball of the match and this short list reads:

                                                    Batsman
Richard Hadlee v India Perth 1980/81 (Sunil Gavaskar)
Chris Cairns v West Indies Taupo 1999/00 (Sherwin Campbell)
Daryl Tuffey v Pakistan Napier 2000/01 (Saeed Anwar)

Cairns came close to producing a unique feat in the following match at Napier when he dismissed Campbell from the first legitimate ball of the game after bowling a wide first up.

In the match at Napier, New Zealand used just five bowlers in their full 50 overs - Tuffey, Chris Martin, James Franklin, Daniel Vettori and Chris Harris.

By no means unusual, it was the 25th occasion that New Zealand had used just five bowlers to bowl the allotted overs (55 and 60 on some occasions) but it was just the seventh time since 1990 that this had happened. It was also three years since the previous instance, also at Napier, against Zimbabwe in 1997/98.

The bowlers on that occasion were Shayne O'Connor, Chris Cairns, Dion Nash, Daniel Vettori and Chris Harris.

Speaking of Harris, he became New Zealand's greatest wicket taker in One-Day Internationals when he had Shahid Afridi caught by Nathan Astle in the game at Napier. By the fourth match of the series Harris had extended his tally to 162 wickets and the table now reads as follows:

                 Wickets Matches Ave
Chris Harris 162 177 35.48
Richard Hadlee 158 115 21.56
Ewen Chatfield 140 114 25.84
Chris Cairns 131 137 33.73
Danny Morrison 126 96 27.53
Martin Snedden 114 93 28.39
Gavin Larsen 113 121 35.39
Chris Pringle 103 64 23.87
Lance Cairns 89 78 30.52
Nathan Astle 86 132 35.75

In addition to achieving the wicket-taking record at Napier, Harris also returned one of the most economical ten over analyses in New Zealand one-day history. The best performances in this respect have been:

10-4- 8-1 Ewen Chatfield v Sri Lanka Dunedin 1982/83
12-6-10-0 Richard Hadlee v East Africa Birmingham 1975*
10-6-10-0 Lance Cairns v Sri Lanka Dunedin 1982/83
10-5-12-2 Gavin Larsen v South Africa Hobart 1993/94
10-2-12-1 Chris Harris v Pakistan Napier 2000/01
10-5-13-0 Ewen Chatfield v India Adelaide 1985/86
10-3-14-2 Martin Snedden v Pakistan Hamilton 1988/89
10-5-14-1 Gavin Larsen v Zimbabwe Wellington 1995/96
10-2-15-2 Ewen Chatfield v England Dunedin 1987/88
10-2-15-1 Willie Watson v England Christchurch 1990/91
10-3-15-3 Geoff Allott v Scotland Edinburgh 1999
10-3-15-1 Chris Harris v West Indies Wellington 1999/00

Stephen Fleming also set a new New Zealand mark when he caught Yousuf Youhana at Napier. It was his 67th catch in One-Day Internationals, passing Martin Crowe's record. After the fourth one-dayer the table read:

                  Catches Matches
Stephen Fleming 69 151
Martin Crowe 66 143
Chris Harris 65 177
Nathan Astle 53 132
John Wright 51 149
Chris Cairns 44 137
Ken Rutherford 41 121
Jeremy Coney 40 88
Roger Twose 37 86
Mark Greatbatch 34 83

In the third match at Wellington, Fleming became just the third New Zealand player to appear in 150 One-Day Internationals. The New Zealand centurions are:

                  Matches
Chris Harris 177
Adam Parore 162
Stephen Fleming 151
John Wright 149
Martin Crowe 143
Chris Cairns 137
Nathan Astle 132
Ken Rutherford 121
Gavin Larsen 121
Richard Hadlee 115
Ewen Chatfield 114

Amongst other current players, Roger Twose has 86 appearances and Craig McMillan 83.

Craig McMillan registered his maiden One-Day International century in the fourth one-dayer at Christchurch. It was achieved with a six off the last ball of the innings, but only after Saqlain Mushtaq had bowled two no-balls in the over, enabling McMillan to regain the strike. McMillan's hundred came off just 75 balls, equalling Chris Cairns' record as the fastest for New Zealand - also achieved at Christchurch.

The fastest one-day hundreds for New Zealand are:

balls
75 Chris Cairns v India Christchurch 1998/99
75 Craig McMillan v Pakistan Christchurch 2000/01
85 Chris Cairns v India Pune 1995/96

94 Ken Rutherford v India Baroda 1994/95

96 Ken Rutherford v Sri Lanka East London 1994/95

McMillan's hundred, which also equalled Cairns' record for the fastest in New Zealand, puts him on the following all-time list for fast one-day centuries:

McMillan hit five sixes in his innings, all coming from the last 26 balls he faced. He hit four from his last eleven balls and three from five balls in the last over of the innings. It was the second time McMillan had hit five sixes in an ODI innings, although on the previous occasion they were his only boundaries. He hit six fours in his century at Christchurch.

The most sixes in an ODI innings for New Zealand are:

Nathan Astle and Roger Twose put on 101 for the second wicket at Christchurch, the seventh time that they had combined for a century partnership in One-Day Internationals. The list is:

wkt
3rd 135 v Zimbabwe Auckland 1995/96
2nd 109 v India Rajkot 1999/00

2nd 101 v Pakistan Christchurch 2000/01

The partnership between Astle and Twose was a New Zealand record for the second wicket against Pakistan and this was followed by a sixth wicket record against Pakistan when Harris assisted McMillan in an unbroken partnership of 118.

This was only the third occasion that New Zealand has posted two century stands in the same One-Day International and Nathan Astle has been involved on each occasion:

3rd wkt 106 Nathan Astle & Stephen Fleming 4th wkt 119* Stephen Fleming & Craig McMillan

v Pakistan at Christchurch, 2000/01

2nd wkt 101 Nathan Astle & Roger Twose 6th wkt 112* Craig McMillan & Chris Harris

Finally, when Waqar Younis bowled Stephen Fleming at Christchurch, it meant that the Pakistan trio of Wasim Akram, Saqlain Mushtaq and Younis had taken exactly 1000 One-Day International wickets between them. The breakdown is as follows:

                  Matches Wkts Ave
Wasim Akram 315 439 23.77
