4th Match, New Zealand v Sri Lanka, Statistical Highlights
Rajneesh Gupta - 13 February 2001
It was the 1686th ODI in cricket history.
It was New Zealand's 369th and Sri Lanka's 346th match.
It was the 44th match between these two sides. The record now reads: Sri Lanka 17, New Zealand 24, tied 2 and abandoned one.
It was the 18th match between these two sides in New Zealand. The record now reads: Sri Lanka 8, New Zealand 10.
Umpires Steve Dunne and Evan Watkin officiated in their 95th and 19th match respectively.
Aravinda de Silva played his 35th match against New Zealand which makes him the Sri Lankan with most appearances against that country alongwith former teammate Arjuna Ranatunga. Just for the record, Australian Steve Waugh has played in most matches (56) against New Zealand.
Stephen Fleming played his 50th consecutive match. He became the sixth player from New Zealand to do so. Incidentally Chris Harris, with 94 matches at a trot, holds the record of playing most consecutive matches for New Zealand.
Adam Parore opened the New Zealand innings for the third time in his career and first time since December 1992. By an odd coincidence all of his three outings as opener have come against Sri Lanka. The other two being at Colombo RP on 04-12-1992 and on 13-12-1992 (making 20 and 13 respectively)
The duck was Parore's 12th in his career and third against Sri Lanka. He now shares the dubious honour of aggregating most ducks for New Zealand against Sri Lanka equalling Dipak Patel's tally.
The duck was Parore's sixth on New Zealand soil- most by any batsman. He was earlier at level with five ducks with Mark Greatbatch, Chris Harris and Ian Smith.
Stephen Fleming (67) on 56 surpassed John Wright's tally of 3888 runs to become the third highest run-scorer for New Zealand after Martin Crowe (4704 runs) and Nathan Astle (4131 runs). Fleming at the end of this match, has 3900 runs from 146 matches to his credit.
The fifty was Fleming's 13th as captain-most for New Zealand equalling Martin Crowe's record. However this was Fleming's 15th fifty plus (including two centuries) as in charge of the team which puts him ahead of Crowe who had 14 fifty plus scores (including one century) to his name.
The wicket of Daniel Vettori was 50th for Nuwan Zoysa. He became the 15th Sri Lankan and 124th bowler overall to do so.
Romesh Kaluwitharana's three dismissals in the match equalled Sri Lankan record of most dismissals by a wicketkeeper against New Zealand in New Zealand. Hashan Tillekeratne had held three catches at Napier on 26-01-1991. Incidentally Kaluwitharana also holds the record of most dismissals by a Sri Lankan wicketkeeper against New Zealand-home or away. He had effected four dismissals at Hyderabad (India) on 20-05-1997.
Russel Arnold got out without scoring for the first time in his career in his 46th match and after scoring 1295 runs. Only Roy Dias has aggregated more runs for Sri Lanka than Arnold in a career before his first duck. Dias' first duck came in his 47th match after 1426 runs.
New Zealand has now lost 11 matches out of last 12 it has played.
Sri Lanka has now beaten New Zealand in 8 matches in a row. New Zealand's last win against Sri Lanka had come at Wellington on 27-03-1997.
Sanath Jayasuriya won his 26th man of the match award which puts him on the second place among the Sri Lankans with most awards. Now only Aravinda de Silva with 27 awards is ahead of Jayasuriya for Sri Lanka.
The award was Jayasuriya's fourth against New Zealand-maximum for Sri Lanka. He was earlier at level with Roshan Mahanama with three awards.
