The Numbers Game with Francis Payne

Harry does it again and McMillan's streak come to an end
Francis Payne - 12 February 2001

In the previous two issues of The Numbers Game we have highlighted the not out career of Chris Harris. With yet another unbeaten innings in the final one-dayer at Christchurch, Harris climbs further up the all-time one-day list and with Steve Waugh adding another in the Second Final of the Carlton Series, it's worth looking at the table again.

                      Not Outs Matches
Steve Waugh 55 306
Mohammad Azharuddin 54 334
Chris Harris 47 173
Arjuna Ranatunga 47 269
Michael Bevan 46 154
Wasim Akram 43 311
Javed Miandad 41 233
Imran Khan 40 175
Kapil Dev 39 225
Allan Border 39 273
Heath Streak 38 122
Hashan Tillekeratne 38 181
Saleem Malik 38 283

Harris has a particular liking for his home ground Jade Stadium with half his innings in one-dayers on the ground ending in a not out and his average being higher than his highest score. His record at Christchurch is:

M I NO Runs HS Ave
14 14 7 452 59* 64.57

On the other hand, team-mate Craig McMillan has not done nearly as well at his home ground, showing a curious weakness on 4, 6 and 23. In seven ODIs at Jade Stadium his scores have been 4, 15, 6, 6, 23, 4, 23 - 81 runs at 11.57.

By the end of the Sri Lankan series, Roger Twose's record at home and away was very similar. It read:

        M Runs Ave
Home 36 1070 39.62
Away 46 1583 41.65

Last week we noted that both Sanath Jayasuriya and Aravinda de Silva had modest records in One-Day Internationals played in New Zealand compared to their impressive overall career records. The Sri Lankan skipper soon put the matter right with a superb century at Auckland. It was his 10th hundred in One-Day Internationals and the list is an impressive one indeed with a number of big hundreds - half of them being over 130. The list reads:

189 v India Sharjah 2000/01
151* v India Mumbai 1996/97
140 v New Zealand Bloemfontein 1994/95
134* v Pakistan Lahore 1997/98
134 v Pakistan Singapore 1995/96
120* v India Colombo 1996/97
108 v Bangladesh Colombo 1996/97
105 v India Dhaka 1999/00
103 v New Zealand Auckland 2000/01
102 v Zimbabwe Colombo 1997/98

De Silva, on the other hand, continued to find runs hard to come by in one-dayers in New Zealand having scores of 17, 37, 10 and 5 in the series. A breakdown of his career record reveals:

                 Matches Runs Ave
Overall 275 8430 35.12
In New Zealand 16 320 21.33

Jayasuriya's century at Auckland came from just 76 balls. It was the fastest One-Day International hundred scored at Eden Park and just one ball short of the fastest ever scored in New Zealand.

The 15 fastest centuries in One-Day Internationals include three by Jayasuriya. The list is:

balls
37 Shahid Afridi Pakistan v Sri Lanka Nairobi 1996/97
45 Brian Lara West Indies v Bangladesh Dhaka 1999/00

Romesh Kaluwitharana played in just one match during the series against New Zealand but his two stumpings at Hamilton were enough to equal Moin Khan's One-Day International world record. The players with 20 or more stumpings in ODIs are:
