New Zealand has chance to tie up Youth series Lynn McConnell - 6 February 2001
New Zealand Under-19 go into tomorrow's final day of the second Youth Test with South Africa Under-19 at Bert Sutcliffe Oval needing 244 runs to complete a series victory. South Africa were dismissed for 257, scored off 92.3 overs, by New Zealand who batted out the 11 overs to stumps to finish 11/0. New Zealand bowled and fielded well to keep the pressure on South Africa but know they will not be able to afford the sort of middle-order collapse which marred their first innings effort, until Brendon McCullum completed his rescue role. Chad Baxter scored 51 opening the innings for South Africa and combined well in an 87-run partnership with Hashim Amla for the third wicket. Baxter was lucky to survive when he was caught at slip from a no ball bowled by Taraia Robin. Five runs after their partnership was broken Amla was out for 58. However, Michael Price and Johan Botha added 80 runs for the fifth wicket with Botha first out for 32 scored off 61 balls. Price stayed around while another 20 runs were added but lost two more partners before he was eighth out, for 62 off 102 balls. Imran Khan and Monde Zondeki added 24 for the last wicket. Zondeki was dropped at long on early in his innings and continued to chance his arm while hitting four boundaries. Khan looked solid in defence and didn't look like he was going to go out and was 15 not out at the end. Taraia Robin bowled well for New Zealand but was unlucky not to get more wickets with lots of nicks failing to carry to hand Luke Woodcock (4-50) and Sam Whiteman (3-37) were rewarded for bowling good lines. As New Zealand started their chase, Zondeki bowled with speed at the end and twice had Greg Todd in trouble attempting to evade the ball. © CricInfo
