Canterbury now waits to see where final will be played Lynn McConnell - 4 February 2001
Canterbury stormed to a seven-wicket win over Northern Districts in their State Insurance Cup game at Hagley Oval today, and now have to wait until Auckland's last game on Tuesday to determine who will host the final of the Cup. Lisa Astle completed a good day for her household as husband Robbie Frew scored 111 for the Canterbury Shell Trophy team in its fighting loss to Otago today. She scored 86 off 102 balls. Paula Flannery was a junior partner as Astle had most of the strike but once Astle was out Flannery put her foot down and took only 37 balls to score her 50. She finished on 92 from 85 balls. Twenty-seven wides helped round out the scoring. Conditions were perfect for batting with a lightning fast outfield and Canterbury raced to its target from 36.5 overs. Canterbury had been chasing Northern Districts' total of 234/8.
England and Northern Districts opening batsman Charlotte Edwards was first to take advantage of the superb conditions in scoring 119 not out. Her century was her second of the series and came 112 balls and included 13 fours and by the end of the innings had faced 125 balls and hit 15 fours. Skye Sandilands was the next best scorer with 21. For Canterbury Haidee Tiffen took three for 34 from her 10 overs and benefited from the wicket-keeping skills of Jo Strahan who completed four stumpings standing up to the medium pace of both Tiffen and Nicola Payne who finished with 3/37 from her 10 overs. One of the stumpings was completed from Payne's bowling. Wellington won the toss and batted against Auckland in Auckland. However, it fared little better than yesterday and was all out after 48.3 overs for 155. Fiona Stickney topped the scoring with 30 while Maia Lewis scored 23. CLEAR White Fern Helen Watson continued the good form she has had for Auckland by taking three for 20 from her 10 overs while Nathalie Scripps took two for 33 from 9.3 overs. Auckland looked to be racing towards a comfortable win when scoring at more than five runs an over, but then it dropped below three an over. Emily Drumm continued her improved form by scoring 64 not out from 109 balls and Rebecca Rolls scored 34. Extras were again high with 27 recorded. Auckland got home with four wickets to spare. Fiona King was the best of the Wellington bowlers with two for 40 from her nine overs while Anna Cronin again impressed with her economy. The only Wellington bowler to complete 10 overs she had only 24 runs against her name, with her final four over spell conceding only two runs.
