India 'scared' of England Wisden CricInfo staff - December 16, 2001
Craig White has upped the mind games before the third and deciding Test in Bangalore by declaring that India are "scared" of England. The second Test in Ahmedabad ended in a draw after India, set a target of 374 to win in the second innings, made little effort to chase the runs. Instead the home side were content to bat out the final day and maintain their 1-0 lead in the series, after their comprehensive 10-wicket win in the first Test at Mohali. White, who scored his maiden Test century at Ahmedabad, believes the tourists have the psychological advantage going into the final match.
"We realise now we put lots of pressure on the Indians and them not going for those runs on the final day shows how much they are worried about us, and we have to take that as a big compliment," said White. "We have an inexperienced bowling attack and they shut up shop early doors, so we have to take a positive from that and they are scared. "We were written off before we came out here, everyone thought we were going to get beat 3-0 and we really pushed the Indians, had a good chance of winning the Test match, and unfortunately couldn't do it on the last day," White added. "If we draw the series it will be a fantastic effort. They are expected to win so all the pressure is on them, so I think we can give them a show in the last Test. We've got a good challenge ahead of us and we're all looking forward to it." White said England had bounced back well after their under-par showing at Mohali. "We knew we underperformed and we realised we had a lot of work to do against the spinners. Everyone worked hard in the nets in the build-up to the second Test. We all had a game plan and went out there and put 400 on the board. We couldn't ask for much more than that."
