Playing not so straight Wisden CricInfo staff - December 4, 2001
Deep Dasgupta's maiden Test century was notable for the tiny amount of runs he scored in the V between mid-on and mid-off. There were no runs at all through mid-off, and only four past the bowler on the on side. Dasgupta scored a third of his runs, appropriately enough, to third man. And he was adept off his legs, collecting 40 of his runs to midwicket or fine and square leg. England may have missed a trick by pitching the ball up to him too much. Dasgupta scored 66 of his runs off the front foot, and only 34 when pushed onto the back foot. Dasgupta is only the fifth Indian wicketkeeper to score a Test century, after Farokh Engineer, Syed Kirmani and Budhi Kunderan (who all scored two) and Nayan Mongia. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
