Lee escapes with a fine Wisden CricInfo staff - December 3, 2001
Brett Lee has been fined US$4250 for his outburst during the fourth day's play in the third and final Test at Perth. Although the fine represents 75% of his match fee, Lee will be relieved not to have been suspended after being found guilty of breaching the International Cricket Council's code of conduct on bringing the game into disrepute, and the use of crude or abusive language and making offensive gestures. Lee was reported for his actions following his dismissal of New Zealand tailender Shane Bond. The match referee, Jackie Hendriks, explained that Lee had only avoided harsher punishment because of his "previously unblemished record". Furthermore, Lee's "obvious regret at the act and his apology to Bond immediately afterwards," had been taken into consideration. Hendriks added that he had, however, imposed the maximum financial penalty. "Such blatant and public disregard for the code of conduct which also goes contrary to the tenets of the spirit of the game, leaves me with no alternative but to impose the maximum fine allowable."
