Gough to stay at Yorkshire Wisden CricInfo staff - December 3, 2001
LONDON (Reuters) Media reports have suggested the England fast bowler is ready to end his lifelong association with the Headingley club. But Yorkshire want Gough, 31, to commit himself to the White Rose county beyond the end of his current contract, which expires at the end of next season. "Darren Gough has confirmed that he will continue his career with Yorkshire," a statement from Yorkshire on the England and Wales Cricket Board website said. "His existing contract has a year to run and the club have indicated their willingness to extend the contract when the existing term expires. It has been a difficult time for him personally with a heavy international programme, his benefit activities and persistent press comment as to his future with the club. "The county has acknowledged Darren's significant contribution to Yorkshire cricket over many years both on and off the field and which has included raising the profile and standards of cricket throughout Yorkshire and elsewhere." Gough made just two county championship appearances for Yorkshire last season because of his international commitments with England. That meant he missed 14 championship games but Yorkshire won the title for the first time in 33 years.
