Records galore! Staff Reporter - 8 December 2001
The first match of the LG Abans Tri-Series at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo on Saturday that saw Sri Lanka thrash Zimbabwe witnessed records tumbling in a tizzy. Chaminda Vaas (8-3-19-8) returned world-record figures after his captain had elected to bowl. Vaas' performance in the first match of the tournament beats the previous best of 7/30 by his team-mate Muttiah Muralitharan against India at Sharjah, 2000/01. Vaas also recorded a hat-trick on his way to the best bowling figures in the 1776 ODI's played until now. Zimbabwe, dismissed for just 38 in 15.4 overs, now carry the dubious honour of registering the lowest score in 0ne-Day Internationals. Pakistan's total of 43 against West Indies at Cape Town, 1992/93 was the previous worst-ever. Zimbabwe's previous lowest score, meanwhile, was the 94 they made against Pakistan at Sharjah in 1996/97. Sri Lanka, who knocked off the winning runs in just 4.2 overs, also had the pleasure of registering the fastest one-day win ever. The match-aggregate was the lowest in a one-day international. © CricInfo
