When the game was abandoned they required 159 to win with only five wickets to fall. They never recovered from a bad collapse in the first innings, the whole side being out for 163, after Hobbs and Rhodes had scored 92 together for the first wicket. Taylor, in South Africa's second innings, played admirably, but was more cautious than usual. When the Englishmen went in with 313 to get Hobbs and Rhodes put defeat out of the question, taking the score to 133. Hobbs was seen at his best for two hours and a quarter.
