An on off day Wisden CricInfo staff - August 26, 2001
It's all about knowing where your off stump is. Exactly 100 of Mark Ramprakash's 133 runs came from balls on or around off stump. When the ball was missing off stump he scored a run every two balls and when it was on the stump he scored twice as fast. He could adjust so easily because his form was so good and the batting surface so true – only Caddick and Tufnell didn't reach double figures. Ramprakash had to leave only 33 balls from 233 and was beaten only 11 times. He did well to score his only century in England but he was helped by the best pitch of the series. Mark Ramprakash's hundred was only his second in Test cricket and his first at home, ten years after making his debut. It was scored in his 46th Test (his 31st in England) and 81st innings. His only other Test ton came in his 38th Test: 154 at Bridgetown in 1997-98. His hundred here is the first by an England batsman at The Oval since Graham Gooch (196) and David Gower (157) put on a colossal 351 against Australia in 1985. Ramprakash's innings
