Caborn calls for Zimbabwe rethink Wisden CricInfo staff - August 26, 2001
The Minister for Sport Richard Caborn has called on the English Cricket Board (ECB) to reconsider the team's tour to Zimbabwe in October. In an interview with the Sunday Telegraph Caborn said that the political unrest in Zimbabwe made the trip unadvisable. His comments were made in the light of an announcement by the Zimbabwe government that the BBC would be banned from covering the tour. "I would be very concerned if our national cricket team is going there and our national broadcaster is not allowed (to cover the event)," said Caborn. The worsening crisis in Zimbabwe has prompted the Foreign Office to become involved in the planning of the tour. An ECB spokesman said that they would also be consulting the Zimbabwe Cricket Union in the coming week.
