Pakistan call for ICC action Wisden CricInfo staff - August 24, 2001
Pakistan are set to ask the International Cricket Council (ICC) to change the venue of next year's ICC Trophy. The tournament is scheduled to be held in India but the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) believe that it should be played elsewhere given India's withdrawal from the Asian Test Championship (ATC). Speaking in the Times of India the PCB president Lt Gen Tauqir Zia made their position clear. "Once I hear officially from the Indian cricket board I will write to the ICC demanding a change in the venue." He said that he believed India's action was also going to jeopardise the ICC's ten year plan. "There is no meaning for (it) now. India are scheduled to travel to Pakistan in 2003. After this we can't take any further embarrassments." And he called on the ICC to take action. "It's about time they acted and resolve such issues clear-headedly and authoritatively."
India's decision is likely to cost the PCB dearly through lost media and commercial income, and their anger is increased by the fact that the Indian authorities had repeatedly given assurances that the match in Lahore was not in doubt. "I don't know why they backtracked," said Zia. "I'll make sure Pakistan doesn't tour India unless they come here first."
