Accumulator turns swashbuckler Wisden CricInfo staff - August 21, 2001
Mark Butcher: 244 runs in 5 innings this series Mark Butcher: 173 runs off 227 balls at Headingley
Mark Butcher's highest Test score marked a departure from his normal style of play this summer. Before this innings, Butcher tended to accumulate runs by pushing, flicking and turning the ball to the on side. These shots brought him 153 of his 244 runs before his Headingley heroics. Yesterday, Butcher's runs came from expansive, attacking strokes – the square-cut, cover-drive and on-drive brought him 116 of his eventual 173 runs. The Australian bowlers seem to have had trouble with their radar this summer. Of England's nine partnerships of 50 or more, seven have come from the classic combination of a right-hander and a left-hander.
