There's not a lot you can do when it's raining
Wisden CricInfo staff - August 19, 2001

It's been a frustrating day from a cricket point of view. The match situation may have improved a bit but that hasn't really been down to anything that went on out in the middle. Overall though, for the time we spent on the field I thought we bowled and fielded quite well. The first few overs didn't go as planned, as the ball nestled in a puddle in the covers. All of a sudden our hard, shiny, 15-overs ball was soaking wet, and the difference that makes at this level is enormous. At Headingley you need to hit the deck hard and get a bit of swing, and it took a lot of polishing to get the shine back. After that though we did OK – Mullally came to the party a bit, and Goughie charged in as he always does. It was humid with all the storms about, so conditions were in our favour and we made good use of them.

But then it was a case of sitting and waiting for the declaration that we knew was coming. There was never any question of us taking a chance on the light and trying to reduce the target this evening. When you've got two men charging in at you at 90mph, it's more sensible to call it a day and come back in the morning with all ten wickets in hand. Had we won the toss we would still have treated the game in the same way. Things move quickly in England, and especially at Headingley, and you can't start planning sessions in advance.

But for most of the day we just fiddled about. There's not a lot you can do when it's raining. The Man Utd game was on, which livened things up a bit, but for the most part we just sat around in the dressing-room, played corridor cricket, tried out each other's bats, listened to drivel. Standard fare for bored cricketers!
