Perera reported for throwing
Wisden CricInfo staff - August 18, 2001

COLOMBO (Reuters)
Sri Lanka paceman Suresh Perera has been reported for a suspect bowling action during the first Test against India in Galle. Perera, a 23-year-old all-rounder, was reported by West Indian umpire Steve Bucknor during the Test, a Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) statement said on Saturday.

"He will be subject to the review process of the International Cricket Council (ICC)," added the statement signed by West Indian match referee Cammie Smith and BCCSL chiefexecutive Anura Tennekoon. Sri Lanka won the first Test by 10 wickets on the fourth day on Friday. Perera bowled 12 wicketless overs in the Indian first innings and did not bowl in the second.

No Sri Lankan team official was immediately available for comment. ICC rules on suspect actions say the player involved can continue playing after being reported for throwing for the first time, but his national cricket board should help him take corrective steps and report to ICC within six weeks of the initial report.

"The player may continue playing, but it is entirely up to the umpires to call him if they feel his action is suspect," Smith told Reuters. The Galle Test was only Perera's second, though he has played one-day international cricket.
