Stewart and McGrath stand out
Wisden CricInfo staff - August 18, 2001

Headingley Test, Day 3, Tea
Saturday, August 18, 2001 Alec Stewart gave the crowd some fantastic entertainment this session. He looks in great touch, he's smiling, and has been very impressive. His attitude has been spot on in the situation. He's a good enough player to go out and attack, and really punish the bad balls. You have to hit those deliveries to the boundary and make the bowlers hurt – then the pressure is back on them. The whole England batting line-up has done that much better today. Australia's attack have been operating below par this innings – and that's partly down to the fact that England have played better and not just succumbed. Having said that, Glenn McGrath has been a rock and bowled magnificently. He's the only one Adam Gilchrist could turn to with any confidence today. Jason Gillespie toiled well, without any wickets, and Brett Lee stormed in and hit the pitch really hard – and a lot of batsmen as well. But it's McGrath who's done the real damage.

Andy Caddick's dismissal was unlucky – but I thought he coped very well with it. The decision was pretty ordinary. Even watching the game live, you could see that it hit him higher up than the glove. I'd excuse the umpire if the ball had been closer to the glove – because it can be tricky without the super slo-mo replays to rely on. But that one was poor.

It's a shame Stewart took that single right at the end because now Alan Mullally has to survive five balls – which isn't great for England. Australia will be looking to knock him over as soon as they get back on. They won't mind if Stewart gets another quick 20 or 30, because they'll still have a healthy enough lead.

Ian Healy made a record 395 dismissals in 119 Tests for Australia, and was on the winning side in the last six Ashes series. His comments will appear on Wisden.com at the end of every session for the rest of the series. He was talking to Camilla Rossiter
