Inzamam threatens to sue Wisden CricInfo staff - August 16, 2001
Inzamam-ul-Haq has threatened to sue the Daily Telegraph over an article which said that he was to be quizzed by the International Cricket Council's Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU). The newspaper said that Inzamam would be questioned in connection with his innings in a one-day international against Australia at Cardiff in June when he was stumped second ball after charging Shane Warne. "The suspicion is that Inzamam's sally may have been anything but pointless and investigators are looking into whether it could have been part of some spread-betting operation," the article "I will take the newspaper to court. Is it a crime to play out of your crease and get stumped?" said Inzamam. "I am not guilty of match-fixing but stories and allegations without any substance and evidence to back them up are badly affecting my cricket, my family and my social life." He denied that he had been officially approached by either the Pakistan Cricket Board or the ACU in connection with incident. But PCB chairman Lieutenant General Tauqir Zia admitted that the ACU had asked to speak to Inzamam during the recent tour to England but that the player had not been able to do so. "We will not allow Inzamam to appear as he is our key player and we want him to score runs in our coming season," said Zia. "Maybe after the season, if the ACU asks us, we would make him available." Last year Inzamam was fined $2000 for failing to co-operate with a match-fixing inquiry.
