Clive Rice
Wisden CricInfo staff - August 10, 2001

Wisden overview
Clive Rice was probably South Africa's biggest loser from the years of isolation. He made his first-class debut shortly before the country was barred from the international arena, and was finally appointed captain for the first three one-day internationals after readmission, before being discarded before the 1992 World Cup as "too old" (he was 42). For much of the 1970s and 1980s, Rice proved his allround skills on the next-best stages, putting in matchwinning performances with bat and ball for Nottinghamshire, where he later coached, and the all-conquering Transvaal "Mean Machine". A blisteringly powerful batsman, Rice was also capable of genuine pace with the ball, but it was as a motivator and competitor that he will perhaps be best remembered. Never one to miss a commercial opportunity, Rice was at the centre of controversy over his involvement in the publication of a book by disgraced former captain Hansie Cronje, and can also be found in the commentary box.
