Australian captain Steve Waugh has refused to rule himself out of the remainder of the Ashes tour but admitted that he has little chance of playing in either of the remaining Tests.

Waugh, who sustained a double tear in his left calf muscle batting in the second innings at Trent Bridge, said that his tour was probably over. "You never give up all hope," said Waugh. "There are plenty of worse things. It's only a muscle. You have to get on with life. The job is done. If there is a little bit of frustration, that's selfish."

He will need ten days of intensive treatment before a final decision is made, but the Australian physiotherapist, Errol Alcott has told him that it is an injury which normally takes between four and six weeks to heal.

"I am just going to see how it goes," Waugh said. "Treatment is the best remedy, and after that if I feel like I am getting in the road of the new captain or vice-captain then I will go home."

Vice-captain Adam Gilchrist, who led Australia to victory over the West Indies at Adelaide last winter, is expected to take over for the Headingley Test but the Australian management said that the matter had yet to be discussed. "As far as the captaincy is concerned there will be a decision sooner rather than later," said a spokesman for the Australian Cricket Board. "That needs to be considered by the board of selectors before an announcement is made."
