The weakest link
Wisden CricInfo staff - August 3, 2001
Before this series, the only potential flaw in Australia's batting line-up seemed to lie in their top three and that's been the case so far. Michael Slater, Matthew Hayden and Ricky Ponting have averaged only 21.63 between them - compared with the impressive 66.00 of the next four in the order, all of whom have scored centuries. And the discrepancy is even greater if we ignore Slater's whirlwind first innings of the series, his 77 at Edgbaston. Without it, the top three are averaging only 15.50.
