Rejuvenated West Indies arrive for Kenyan tour
Wisden CricInfo staff - August 2, 2001
NAIROBI (Reuters) West Indies have arrived in the Kenyan capital for a 20-day tour, promising to build on their first away series win in six years.
West Indies, who have just beaten Zimbabwe 1-0 over two Tests, will play three one-day internationals, one three-day match and one over four days against Kenya. The matches will be staged in Nairobi and the coastal tourist resort of Mombasa between August 4-19.
Captain Carl Hooper said: "There is no secret that we have not been doing so well lately but the 2-1 test series loss to South Africa early in the year and the Zimbabwean tour has rejuvenated us."
Speaking at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, he singled out Chris Gayle, who scored three centuries in Zimbabwe and was man of the series, from a crop of younger players.
West Indies have not played Kenya since their shock defeat to them in the 1996 World Cup. Vice captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul and wicketkeeper Courtney Browne are the only survivors of that defeat.
Kenya captain Maurice Odumbe, who led his side to their most famous victory five years ago, said: "We've been starved of good cricket in a long time. We'll learn a few things from them, having had a magnificent run in Zimbabwe. We're certainly underdogs but it is always a challenge to bowl and bat against a test side like West Indies."
Kenya has full international status for one-day matches but not for Tests. The sides first meet in a three-day match in Nairobi starting on Saturday.
