No Baggy Green changes Wisden CricInfo staff - August 1, 2001
Australia plumped for an unchanged side for the third Ashes Test at Trent Bridge which starts on Thursday. As mind-games go it's fairly mild, but the announcement will have a more devastating effect on England than any of John Buchanan's leaked memos. While England scrape around for a fully fit XI, Australia just name the same juggernaut for a Test which they only have to draw to retain the Ashes.
And there seems to be no danger that they will slack off now that victory is in sight. Steve Waugh certainly isn't one to lie back and think of England.
"It is really important to treat every Test match as a special event," he said, "because it is. The Trent Bridge pitch looks pretty good. There is a good covering of grass, and it will not be an easy decision to make if we win the toss."
As England have lost the last seven Ashes tosses, as well as the last two Tests by massive margins, it is not a decision which should trouble him unduly.
Team: 1 Michael Slater, 2 Matthew Hayden, 3 Ricky Ponting, 4 Mark Waugh, 5 Steve Waugh (captain), 6 Damien Martyn, 7 Adam Gilchrist (wicketkeeper) 8 Shane Warne, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Jason Gillespie, 11 Glenn McGrath. 12th man Justin Langer.
