Majid Sayed’s Whack Set Biman Off to Dream to Become Champions
Shahryar Khan - 26 April 2001
Majid Sayed, the Pakistani recruit of Biman Bangladesh has ushered his team to an exhilarating victory over Abahani Ltd, defeating them by 6 wickets today in BNS. Winning the toss Abahani decided to bat first in a wicket that seemed to a batsman's paradise. Mohammad Hossain and Azam Iqbal put on 124 run in the opening wicket in just eighteen overs forecasting a massive end up. It was Ziaur Rashid who got Azam (61) of his own delivery to give his team a break. Eight balls later, Hossain offered a catch to Athar Ali of Saifullah Khan for 65. The next two quick falls made Abahahi retreat from the assault and Asadullah Khan Biplob took the charge to carry on the innings to a safe mode. The front tail assisted him well enough to do the job; the contribution comes mostly from Md. Salim who made 40. Asadullah Khan returned undefeated with a feat of 77 beside him that included six boundaries. The right arm off breaker from Biman, Saifullah Khan Jem captured a haul of 4 wickets giving away 35 runs.
Biman's crestfallen start having two wickets gone in 33, was luminously protected by Majid Sayed's swaggering knock of unbeaten 162 that comprised of a flood of twenty fours and two sixes. The rest of the team like their opponents had nothing but to watch the dazzles that were coming out of his bat. No other half centuries even were seen in Biman innings; only Khaled Mahmood strived to score 41 and Majid's compatriot Manzoor Akhter amassed 28 to set off for a comfortable victory having 4 wickets and 17 balls unused. Three or four catches were dropped by the Abahani fielders, which consequently forced them to pay the price. Niamur Rashid can only console him for his two wickets he got at the very beginning of procession. Abahani had to put up with the second defeat they received from Biman-the earlier was a smaller one-only by 2 runs in the round league match.
