Callaghan keeps EP alive MWP - 29 October 2000
A ruthlessly efficient, chanceless and unbeaten century from veteran all rounder Dave Callaghan kept Eastern Province alive on the second day of their Supersport Series match against Western Province at St. George's Park on Saturday. Callaghan finished the day on 124 as EP crawled their way to 256-7 in 104 overs, still trailing by 106 runs but grateful just to be alive thanks to Callaghan who batted for five hours and faced 256 balls during an innings that contained 17 fours and two sixes, both off left arm spinner Claude Henderson. Justin Kemp was the only other EP batsman to contribute lengthy support to Callaghan during a fourth wicket stand of 77 while WP's five-man attack toiled long and hard on a pitch offering virtually nothing to seamers and spinners alike. Neil Johnson looked dangerous but could manage only 11 overs in the day while Henderson did the bulk of the work, producing 33 overs of varied and attacking spin. Paul Adams also showed welcome signs of a return to form and WP will hope that the two spinners will play a more dominant role in the fourth innings if the immaculate pitch shows signs of wear-and-tear on the fourth day.
