Awesome Flintoff powers England to stunning victory
Staff and Agencies - 24 October 2000

Pakistan became the second side in six months to be 'Flintoffed' when England's young powerhouse charged the attack with a mesmerising 84 to steer his side to an historic victory in Karachi.

Twenty-two year-old Andy Flintoff, who's future was recently called into question when he failed a fitness test on his back, responded to a call for a match-winning performance with a mighty innings off just 60 balls leaving his Pakistan opponents stunned and shellshocked.

Hitting three massive sixes in addition to six boundaries, the Lancastrian, who last summer launched a single-handed 134 run attack of great ferocity over Surrey in the NatWest quarter final, shared a superb fifth wicket partnership of 138 with Graham Thorpe.

While Flintoff finally fell at the last hurdle with England three runs short of victory, Thorpe went onto seal a famous five wicket victory with a four, a shot that created complete mayhem in the packed National Stadium.

Thorpe and Flintoff came together with England's score 164 for four and the match finely balanced after a significant contribution from Nasser Hussain. It was the England captain who steadied the ship after a rocky start to their reply, demonstrating a positive and confident approach from the first over.

After making 73, he was eventually stumped by Moin Khan in the 31st over, having taken England through one danger patch but leaving them poised on the brink of another.

The combined youth and experience of Flintoff and the left-handed Thorpe meant the outcome was in safe hands and by the end, Thorpe was still there unbeaten on 64, having faced 66 balls while Craig White shared his triumph at the other end.
