Somerset pair set the tone for England victory

The Somerset pair of Andy Caddick and Marcus Trescothick set the tone for a convincing England performance as they played their final warm-up game prior to the one-day series against Pakistan, starting on Tuesday.

A young Pakistan 'A' side found England too strong in all departments as the tourists cantered to a 10-wicket victory.

Trescothick has begun the tour in belligerent fashion. He followed up his hundred on Friday with a 47 ball 50, before retiring 'hurt' to enable others to benefit from match practise. He had struck three sixes and five fours.

Stewart too choose to retire 'hurt' shortly after completing his 50. Both openers are expected to be fit for Tuesday.

Hussain and Thorpe took the opportunity for batting practise, and knocked off the remaining runs without loss. Hussain continued his recuperation from the poor form that blighted his English summer, remaining undefeated on 31.

A miserly spell of bowling by Andy Caddick had given England the initiative when they were in the field, and he finished with the figures of 3-15 in his 10 over spell.

England had won the toss and elected to field. Salman Butt was soon caught behind of Caddick before a smart piece of fielding by skipper Hussain accounted for Ijaz Ahmed jnr, sent back by Yasir Hameed.

Giles, recovered from his calf problem, replaced Grayson in the team and soon illustrated his value with two quick wickets. First he bowled Hameed, before Bazid Khan edged a cut to Stewart.

Pakistan 'A' were given some hope by a 66-run partnership from just 82 balls between Fahad Khan and Naumanullah, who top scored with 64, before he too was bowled by Giles. They finished on 169-7 in their 50 overs.

With Hoggard given a workout in place of White, and Alleyne and Solanki playing for The Rest of Asia in a warm-up game last week, the England management have insured that everyone in the squad has had match practise.
