Carl Hooper keen to make international comeback Staff and agencies - 16 October 2000
Former West Indian international Carl Hooper is prepared to come out of retirement to play in the forthcoming one-day series in Australia, according to reports. The 33 year-old all-rounder appeared for his home side Guyana last week in the Red Stripe Bowl and as a result, earned himself qualification for the international series against Australia starting next January. He confirmed he would make himself available to play for the West Indies if selectors, who meet today to select the touring party for Australia, felt he still had a part to play and wanted to bolster the side with experience. A spokesman for the West Indies Cricket Board of Control said: "Carl Hooper has said he wants to play but we cannot say whether he is under consideration or not. The selectors will announce their squad tomorrow." Hooper last played for West Indies when he was vice-captain to Brian Lara in the 1999 home series against Australia but he joined the party late after staying at his home in Adelaide to tend to his ill new-born son. He made the surprise announcement about his retirement during the one-day series in the Caribbean and withdrew before the final match had been played. In all he played in 80 Tests and 182 one-day matches throughout a 12 year international career.
