Karnataka drub Goa in a day and a half Sankhya Krishnan - 9 October 2000
Karnataka completed a thumping innings and 112 run victory over Goa shortly after lunch on the second day of their Cooch Behar Trophy Under-19 game at the Rajendra Prasad Stadium in Margao today. The win took Karnataka to the head of the points table with 24 points from 4 games, virtually assuring them of one of the two qualifying spots from the South Zone. Goa are languishing at the bottom of the table with just 6 points from 4 games. Resuming at 172/2 in their first innings after having skittled out Goa for 65, Karnataka declared without further loss on 227 immediately after opener Sudhir Rao had completed his century. Rao's 101 came off 172 balls and included eight fours and a six. His partner at the other end Deepak Chowgule stayed undefeated on 47 (74 balls, 2 fours). For the second time in the match, the Goan batting came apart at the seams, as they capitulated to a sorry figure of 50 all out. Sixteen year old off spinner Mulewa Dharmichand added four more wickets to his first innings haul of seven to end with match figures of 11/33. Left arm spinner Keerthi Bhat and left arm seamer Steve Lazarus shared the remaining wickets between them. Goa's SS Sachin who opened in the first innings was absent hurt. Only one batsman V Kandolkar (14) reached double figures in an innings that lasted only 21 overs and one and a quarter hours. Karnataka completed an innings victory for the loss of only two wickets, a rare feat.
