Waqar caught by TV, bowled by John Reid AC Ganesh - 9 July 2000
Another Pakistani speedster Azhar Mahmood was fined 30% of his match fee while Pakistan skipper Moin Khan was severely rerimanded for allowing the spirit of the game to be impaired. The decision was taken after seeing the incident, which was clearly visible on television. Waqar was earlier warned by the match referee during the third Test at Kandy against Sri Lanka. During the course of the lunch interval TV pictures clearly showed Waqar scratching the ball and trying to lift the quarter seam. The incident which was captured by the television camera zoom which focussed on Waqar caught him in the act. It was brought to the attention of the match referee John Reid, and he discussed the matter with the Pakistan management. This is not the first time that Pakistani players have been pulled up for ball tampering. The first time Pakistan was accused of this dates back to their 1992 tour of England. In the 1999 World Cup, Pakistan's Shoaib Akhtar was also named by a commentator to be caught in the act of trying to alter the ball during the course of a match. The charges of ball tampering were dismissed as baseless by the Pakistan management. The Pakistani chief selector and a former Test captain Javed Burki, during the course of his testimony to the Justice Qayyum Commission on match-fixing, had said "Ball-tampering by Pakistan players also took place during the [1996] tour of England." The incident has not been the monopoly of Pakistan players alone. Even former England captain Mike Atherton was caught in the act during the course of the first Test match against South Africa at Lord's in 1994. During the game, Atherton took out dirt from his pocket and appeared to rough up one side of the ball. This incident created a furore of sorts the world over with people asking for Atherton's resignation.
