Indian bowling limitations exposed Partab Ramchand - 27 November 1999
India's bowling limitations were exposed at the first opportunity on the second day of their opening tour match against Queensland at Brisbane on Saturday. Scoring at a brisk rate of well over four runs an over, the home team rattled up 363 for seven wickets off 87 overs at stumps, gaining a lead of 86 runs. The biggest disappointment was Anil Kumble who finished the day with the unenviable bowling figures of 26-0-121-0. It was left to new boy T Kumaran, a surprise selection for the tour, to check Queensland after ML Love and Andrew Symonds had put them in a position of considerable strength with a fourth wicket stand of 204 runs off 40 overs. Both got hundreds, Love scoring 120 and Sydmonds 161. The Indians got the encouragement of an early wicket when Maher (10) was leg before to Mohanty at 30 in the tenth over. However Hayden and Love then added 61 runs for the second wicket from 18 overs before the former was caught by Dravid off Venkatesh Prasad. Hayden's 44 was compiled off 77 balls and he hit six fours and a six. Skipper Stuart Law had the mortification of being run out by Kumble without facing a single ball and Queensland at this stage were 91 for three in the 29th over. But then Love and Symonds got entrenched without much difficulty. Soon they were doing pretty much what they liked with the bowling, being particularly severe on Kumble. It was Kumaran who finally broke the stand when he had Love caught by Venkatesh Prasad. Love faced 174 balls during his four hour stay at the crease hitting 10 fours. Kumaran then picked up the wickets of Foley (4) and Secombe (8). Symonds, who had come in at 91 for three was seventh out at 357 after batting four hours. Like Love, he too faced 174 balls but hit 26 fours and a six. At close, pace bowling mates Andrew Bichel and Adam Dale were at the crease with three runs each. The Indian attack revolved around the four main bowlers. But Kumble was not at all effective. Venkatesh Prasad took one for 93 off 24 overs while Mohanty took two for 58. Kumaran was the pick of the bowlers, taking three for 54. Earlier, the Indians, resuming at 273 for nine, added only four runs before Kumaran was out to Dale for 18, giving the bowler his only wicket of the innings. close, Symonds' innings came to an end when he was leg before to Mohanty.
