Hampshire Mourns the death of Malcolm Marshall Hampshire CCC Press Release - 5 November 1999
Hampshire County Cricket Club are today mourning the death of one of their most outstanding cricketers, West Indian fast-bowler Malcolm Marshall, who died in Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Bridgetown, Barbados yesterday at the age of 41. Malcolm finally lost his battle against cancer of the colon, which was detected whilst coaching with the West Indies during the Cricket World Cup. Malcolm, who made his debut for the county in 1979, took 1063 wickets in all competitions for the county, coupled with his 376 Test captures for his country. He played until his retirement in 1993 and then took on the role as club coach, a job he held until illness prevented him from continuing. Malcolm will be sadly missed by all who loved cricket. He was a very popular member of the side who gave more than 100% towards his adopted county. Hampshire captain Robin Smith said of Malcolm; "He was a wonderful friend, not only to myself personally but to everyone he came into contact with. He always had time for everyone .... his spirit will live on at Hampshire. I feel desperately for Connie, Mallie and his mum, who is still living in Barbados and all his family. We must try and look back at all those wonderful memories of his time with us at the club, as the guy was an absolute legend for Hampshire. I was glad to have been at his wedding just two months ago, to see him looking so happy at that time. These memories will always be with me. We will all miss him desperately." Malcolm leaves his wife Connie and young son, Mallie.
