Ranatunga's Captaincy World Record
Atul Kahate
27 January 1999
Although he is in great controversy at the moment, Sri Lankan skipper
Arjuna Ranatunga has reached a personal landmark: he has captained a
team in Limited Overs International (LOI) matches than anyone else. He
broke the record of Australian Allan Border, ironically in the match
which caused the hearings against him for the alleged breach of ICC's
code of conduct.
Ranatunga has now led Sri Lanka in 179 matches, winning 85 and losing
exactly the same. He has also won the toss a record 94 times, although
Mohammad Azharuddin could challange him on that front as well.
Here is a list of players who have led their countries in 50 or more
LOI matches.
