KwaZulu-Natal News Round-up
By Ken Borland
4 January 1999
Dale Benkenstein, out of commission since mid-November with a broken
finger, is fit again and looks set to join internationals Jonty Rhodes
and Lance Klusener in the Natal team for the SuperSport Series match
against Free State starting at Kingsmead on Friday.
Test all-rounder Shaun Pollock is the sole player whose availability
is uncertain. By rights the United Cricket Board could insist he stand
down from the weekend's domestic games to save him for the fifth Test
against the West Indies, which starts on January 15.
Klusener, in the national squad but left out of the final XI at
Newlands, will be keen to play for Natal this weekend and make another
bid for the return of his Test place, while the Board's reluctance to
over-use their fast bowlers has never extended to batsmen and Rhodes,
in top-class form, should slot into a full-strength Natal batting
line-up.
The Natal squad have been hard at work in the nets over the festive
period under Graham Ford, who was recently restored to the main
coaching post. Ford said the side will be chosen on Tuesday.
