INDIA v PAKISTAN Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1999
At Toronto, September 21. Pakistan won by five wickets. Toss: Pakistan. Batsmen at last enjoyed themselves in bright sunshine on the first true pitch of the tournament. Tendulkar, finding something like his real form, and Ganguly prospered in a stand of 98, then Ganguly and Azharuddin capitalised to add 104. Azharuddin completed his third fifty but Ganguly fell trying to bring up his hundred, to a catch at deep extra cover; he had hit two sixes and five fours. Opening instead of Saeed Anwar, who was ill, Ijaz Ahmed joined Shahid Afridi in a breath taking assault that yielded 99 from the first ten overs. Ijaz's 60 came off 42 balls, Afridi's 39 off 30; one of his two sixes landed in an adjoining car park. Later, Inzamam-ul-Haq, ending his suspension, and the teenager Hasan Raza steadily guided Pakistan to a consolation victory. Man of the Match: S. C. Ganguly. Man of the Series: S. C. Ganguly. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
