INDIA v PAKISTAN Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1999
At Toronto, September 18. India won by 34 runs. Toss: Pakistan. India made sure of the Cup with a resilient performance, and Ganguly won the match award for his bowling, after scoring only two. Having to bat first on a bowler-friendly pitch, India could raise only 182 for six – a strong recovery from 23 for three, when Tendulkar went for nought in the 12th over. Azharuddin charted a course through choppy waters, while Jadeja and Robin Singh, who hit 32 off 29 balls, provided late momentum. As Shahid Afridi smashed six fours in 44 off 38 balls, a Pakistan victory seemed assured. But complacency led to reckless strokes – all ten wickets fell to catches – and they were undone by Ganguly, who claimed five for 16. Man of the Match: S. C. Ganguly. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
