England's decision to play a clutch of all-rounders paid its dividend when Dougie Brown, batting No. 9, hit his first delivery to the boundary to secure victory with 11 balls to spare. The win, owing much to the team's all-rounder depth, might have been beyond them a few months earlier. With less than nine overs remaining, England, chasing 236 for victory, were 165 for six, despite 51 from Stewart. But Thorpe, working the ball well, took control and added 70 in seven overs with Fleming – who had shown great instinct throughout the series. With the scores level, Fleming was run out, for 33 from 27 balls; Thorpe remained unbeaten at the finish. West Indies paid for some dreadful fielding and conceded 31 extras. Earlier, the medium-pacers had put a brake on their batsmen after an opening stand of 97 between Stuart Williams and Chanderpaul. Ealham bowled with superb discipline: his ten overs cost just 26 and he had Lara cannily stumped by Stewart as he pushed forward and unwittingly dragged his back foot. Only Simmons, scoring 39 from 37 balls in the closing overs, lent the total a competitive edge.
