AUSTRALIA v NEW ZEALAND 1997-98 Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1999
At Melbourne, January 21 (day/night). New Zealand won by four wickets. Toss: Australia. A brilliantly paced century from Fleming enabled his team to finish with an exceptional win. It could not lift them into the finals, but was New Zealand's only victory over Australia throughout their tour. Bookmakers made them 20 to 1 when they limped to 42 for three and, when they dawdled past 100 in the 30th over, a target of 252 looked like Everest. But they pruned it from 83 off ten overs to 61 off seven and 18 off three. Five were needed – and taken – off the last over, from Warne. McMillan's explosive 26 off 14 balls complemented the stylish fluency of Fleming. Earlier, Ponting took his aggregate to 306 in six innings with a smooth hundred. Man of the Match: S. P. Fleming. Attendance: 27,722. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
