AUSTRALIA v SOUTH AFRICA 1997-98 Wisden CricInfo staff - January 1, 1999
Toss: Australia. International debut: B. E. Young. South Africa simply overwhelmed Australia, who were inept in all departments. Australia's batting was so dreadful and South Africa's bowling so expectant of an edge that the fast men occasionally had three slips during the dying overs. Donald, relishing the WACA's famous bounce, swept away the middle order like a horse swishing a fly. South Africa made a mockery of a target of 166, bagging it in just 28.2 overs. They hit or cleared the fence 20 times compared with Australia's six. New spinner Brad Young was treated with total contempt and yielded seven an over. Cronje summed up the proceedings when he won the match with a cover-driven six.
